What it is

Women in Technology is a nonprofit professional association in the Washington, DC metro area focused on advancing women in technology "from the classroom to the boardroom." Founded in 1994, it serves more than 1,000 members through education, mentoring and networking. It is governed by a Board of Directors and run largely by volunteer committees, with an office in Falls Church, Virginia.

What it offers founders

The most direct fit for founders is the Women Business Owners program, which supports women business owners at all stages through mostly virtual expert events and peer networking. Its 2025 to 2026 series, Pitch Ready, let entrepreneurs pitch business ideas to a panel that selected one individual or team for a monetary award. Beyond that, WIT offers the Accelerate(her) series of free monthly virtual career sessions for members, Meet the Company visits, biannual job fairs, a member directory and an online job bank with discounted posting rates, which can help a startup recruit technical talent. The Mentor-Protege Program, running since 1998, pairs professional women with mentors in two cohorts a year starting in September and February, each with five facilitated online sessions plus in-person networking. The Leadership Foundry prepares women executives for corporate board service with a curriculum developed with the National Association of Corporate Directors.

Who it is for

WIT serves women working in or moving into technology in the DMV, from students to executives, plus the companies that employ and sponsor them. Girls in Technology works with more than 500 girls a year in the DC metro area. Founders who are women, and startups building diverse technical teams, are the clearest fit.

Membership and pricing

Published rates on the Join or Renew page are $150 for a one-year standard membership, $250 for two years, and $50 for federal or state government employees and for students, who must send a photo ID to WIT staff for validation. Members get free Accelerate(her) sessions, discounted WIT.Connect event registration, 50% off The Leadership Foundry application fee, and discounted Leadership Awards gala tickets.

Why it matters in the DMV ecosystem

WIT has three decades of networks across the region's government contracting, corporate and tech employers. The annual Leadership Awards honor women leaders who mentor the next generation; nominations for the 2027 awards opened October 1, 2026 and the ceremony is set for May 13, 2027. For a woman founder new to the DMV, WIT offers a ready peer network, mentors and visibility with established technology leaders at a modest annual cost.
