What it is

DC Public Library is the District's public library system, with 26 locations around the city. Its central location, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library at 901 G St. NW, houses meeting and study rooms, public computers, printing and scanning, Wi-Fi and a set of hands-on spaces called The Labs. For a founder without an office, the library works as a free place to meet, research and prototype.

What it offers founders

  • Meeting and study rooms: Free for anyone with a valid library card, bookable online up to 60 days ahead, with same-day booking for study rooms. Meetings are limited to three consecutive hours per group and three meetings per 30 days across the system.
  • The Labs at MLK Library: A Fabrication Lab makerspace with 3D printers, laser cutters, Cricut machines and sewing machines; a Studio Lab for audiovisual production; a Memory Lab for digitizing media; and a Tool Library. Use is by appointment, and machines require an intro class first.
  • Business research databases: Gale Business: Entrepreneurship, Gale Business: Insights, Reference Solutions for company and lead research, Business Source Complete, the Washington Business Journal, DC legal forms, and LinkedIn Learning and O'Reilly for skills training.
  • Small business advising events: The library has hosted Small Biz Assist sessions at MLK Library with the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development, offering free one-on-one advice on business resources, certification and procurement readiness.

Who it is for

Anyone who lives, works, pays property taxes or attends school in DC can get a card. Residents of nearby Maryland and Virginia jurisdictions, including Montgomery, Prince George's, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Alexandria and Falls Church, can also get one free. Others pay $20 for a one-year card. This makes the library useful for early-stage and solo founders across the DMV, not only District residents.

How to engage

Start by applying for a card online through the Get a Card page; you receive a temporary number by email and convert it to a permanent card in person with photo ID within 90 days. Book rooms through Reserve a Room, browse databases under Research and Learn, and schedule lab appointments from The Labs page. Lab users must complete a release form and bring a permanent library card and government photo ID.

Why it matters in the DMV ecosystem

Coworking memberships and market research subscriptions are real costs for pre-revenue founders. The library covers part of that gap at no charge: a downtown meeting room for a customer interview, a database for market sizing or prospect lists, and a makerspace for a first physical prototype. It also serves as a venue where District agencies meet small business owners in person.
