What it is

Xometry is an online marketplace for custom manufactured parts and prototypes. Since its founding in 2013, its stated mission has been to make the world's manufacturing capacity accessible to all. The company went public in June 2021 and trades on Nasdaq under the symbol XMTR. It relocated its headquarters to North Bethesda, Maryland, in December 2022. Xometry reports 90,000 buyers, 5,000 suppliers in its partner network and more than 165 million parts shipped.

What it offers founders

Hardware founders can upload a CAD file in formats such as STEP, STL or SLDPRT, receive an instant quote and order online. Services listed on its capabilities page include CNC machining, 3D printing (FDM, SLS, SLA, PolyJet, HP Multi Jet Fusion and metal), sheet and tube fabrication, injection molding, urethane casting, die casting and metal stamping, plus finishing and assembly. This makes it a practical option for moving from prototype to production without building a supplier network from scratch.

For manufacturers and machine shops

Shops can join Xometry's supplier network for free, with no subscriptions or platform fees. Xometry matches jobs to a shop's capabilities and certifications, and shops choose which jobs to accept. Applying takes about 10 minutes with a W-9 and certifications on hand, and approval typically takes 3 to 15 business days, sometimes with a test part. Details are on the Become a Supplier page. The company also runs Thomas, which it says lists 500,000 manufacturing suppliers.

How to engage

Buyers start by uploading a part for a quote on xometry.com. U.S. support is available by phone at +1-800-983-1959 (Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm ET, Saturday 9am to 5pm ET) and by email at support@xometry.com, and buyers can book a consultation through the contact page. Job seekers can see the careers page.

Why it matters in the DMV ecosystem

Xometry is one of the region's public technology companies and a Maryland example of a marketplace startup that scaled to an IPO. For DMV hardware, defense and medical device founders, it offers an accessible way to source parts, and for local machine shops it is a channel to new customers.
